That was the idea behind the 2009 Tehama County Cattlmen's Spring Field Day, which did away with the traditional guest speaker on Saturday and included new contests for the attendees, including a dog trial that attracted 12 contestants.
Tony Turri, President of the Cattlemen's Association, hosted the event at his ranch and nearly 400 people showed up for their chance at a $1,000 prize in the Herman Daugherty Memorial Ranch H o r s e C o n t e s t , bid on homemade desserts made by the Tehama County Cattlewomen or just to enjoy New York steak and hamburgers provided by Vic Woolery of Vic's Branding Iron.
The event proved popular enough to attract California Cattlemen's Association President Tom Talbot, who said he will soon be traveling to Washington, D.C. to discuss the issue of tuberculosis in cattle with national legislators.
These events are just fantastic, Talbot said. (It) really embraces what the cattle industry is all about.
The event also attracted Flournoy rancher and Water For Life Co-founder Richard Nicholson. Like many California ranchers, Nicholson moves his cattle up to Oregon during the dry season. Combined with his time in Oregon- based Water for life, Nicholson spends as much as two-thirds of his time up north, he said.
That move usually comes around the first of May meaning Saturday, he was free to come to the field day.
Turri had a few words for those who chose not to attend.
It's a been a great day, it's been a gorgeous day, and if (you) didn't make it, (you're) missing out, Turri said.
