Tehama County Cattlemen’s
Ron S. Knight Memorial Scholarship
Tehama County Cattlemen award the Ron S. Knight Memorial Scholarship. The community lost a leader with the sudden death of Ron Knight on May 19, 2000.
Ron started his U.C, Cooperative Extension career in Solano County in 1957. He moved to Tulare County as 4-H Youth Advisor in 1964 and was appointed county Director/Livestock Advisor for Tehama County in 1972. Ron held that position until retirement in 1991. His thirty-four year career resulted in significant achievements for livestock producers.
Following retirement from the University of California, Ron was active in livestock and community organizations. Ron was treasurer for the Tehama County Cattlemen’s Association, and treasurer for the Tehama District Junior Livestock Committee. He was a Tehama county Farm Bureau Director and a member of the Red bluff Bull and Gelding Sale Committee.
In 1984, the Tehama County Cattlemen’s Association recognized Ron for his livestock work with their “Man of the Year” award. The Tehama District Fairgrounds 4-H building was recently renamed the “Ron Knight Youth Ag Center”.
In memory of Ron Knight, the Tehama County Cattlemen’s Association initiated a scholarship in the amount of $1000 Dollars. The first scholarship award went to Chris McClain 2001/2002, Casey Hendricks received the 2002/2003 award and Nicki Humphrey, Trisha Andersen & Wendy Bruce each received the scholarship in 2003/2004. This year three $1000 scholarships will be awarded The selected candidate must pursue a major in an agricultural or Ag related course of study with the intention of earning a Bachelor or higher degree. Selection is based upon demonstrating high school achievement, community activity and work experience. Successful applicants must demonstrate a combination of great promise and a desire to work in Northern California following graduation.
